Land van Cuijk is a natural gem in the region that is home to EuroParcs Resort De Kraaijenbergse Plassen. From large lakes to seemingly endless woods, heaths and sand drifts, this region has it all. Some well-known natural gems are Sint Anthonis Staatsbossen and Overloonse bossen, both luscious woods. ‘Recreatief Overloon’ highlights the many possibilities in this tourist hotspot, from mountain bike routes to regular cycling routes, Zoo Parc Overloon, an animal park with its famous white tiger, and a nine-hole golf course with interesting height differences. Overloon also has an open-air theatre. It boasts a long history and acted as a backdrop for many WWII battles.
Many more battles were fought in this area throughout the centuries, all the way back to Roman times. Many roads converged at Cuijk, making it an important hub. So important that the Romans even built a bridge across the Meuse river. Museum Ceuclum in Cuijk, housed in the tower of Sint-Martinuskerk (St Martin’s Church), which was demolished around 1915, illustrates the region’s Roman past. Later too the Cuijk region remained an economic hotspot, which resulted in the construction of castles and great prosperity. This aspect of the local history is nicely illustrated in Grave, a town with many hotels, cafés and restaurants. The Tongelaar castle in particular is a real must-see. Its history goes all the way back to the ninth century and the gate tower dates back to the early fifteenth century.
